WAL as a Utility Token
WAL is the native token of the Walrus decentralized storage protocol. Its primary function is not speculative — it is operational. Storage providers must stake WAL to participate in the network, creating a direct link between token holding and network security. The more WAL staked by a provider, the more storage capacity they can offer and the more rewards they earn.
The Fee Economy
Every file stored on Walrus generates storage fees paid in WAL. These fees flow to storage node operators proportional to their stake, creating a sustainable economic loop: network usage generates fee revenue, fee revenue rewards stakers, and staking requirements create demand for the token. This is a significantly more robust tokenomic design than networks that rely solely on inflation to reward participants.
Governance Rights Are the Layer on Top
Governance voting is the most visible use of WAL but arguably not the most economically significant. Protocol parameter changes, storage pricing adjustments, and network upgrade decisions are all governed by WAL holders. However, these governance rights derive their value from the underlying fee economy — a governance token with no protocol revenue is simply a voting mechanism with no stakes.
